2018 OBCC PAX

Post by Brain »

Here are the PAX numbers we will be using this year. Anything with a "t" indicates a class that would normally be on race tires and I've calculated a modifier. If there's no "t" then they are the real PAX numbers.

***Adjustments to the street tire pax modifier (anything with a "t") are still possible until we get some input and/or run a few events***

Open to discussion/criticism/input......yes - I know nobody really cares

Cool. Looking at my oil pan last night, I think I will be running my street tires in SMF at the lot from now on. Yikes...

Basically PAX is a method of being able to compare or equalize all cars. For cars like mine or yours that are in the slowest class (H-Street) it's not realistic to think we could win on raw time. PAX adjusts all time proportionately to allow comparison between classes.

Here's the official blurb....

This Index was developed by Rick Ruth and reflects study of results from well over 500 nationwide Solo events including, the Tire Rack® Solo National Championships, National Tour, Alabama Region, Arkansas Region, Atlanta Region, Chicago Region, California Sports Car Club, Central Florida Region, Equipe Rapide (Florida & Texas), Great Lakes Solo Series, Hawaii Region, Houston Region, Midwest Divisional Series, Milwaukee Region, New England Region, Northwest Region, Northern New Jersey Region, Oregon Region, Philadelphia Region, Rocky Mountain Series, San Francisco Region, San Diego Region, South Jersey Region, St. Louis Region, Tri-State Sports Car Council, Texas Region, Washington DC Region, Wisconsin Autocrossers Inc., and many, many others.

The "Street Tire PAX" is something we use to adjust the classes that would normally be on race tires. It's calculated by me based on the "real" PAX numbers. So for instance - Tyson's CRX is in SMF which normally allows the use of R-Compound tires. R-Compunds are at least 1 second faster than street tires. If he chooses to run street tires then the Street Tire PAX adjustment takes his regular PAX and adjusts it down to account for the slower tires.

Make sense? Probably not - you are not alone

If my Pontiac Firefly was stock, I'd run in H/Stock, and my 60s run gets a PAX "handicap" applied to it, so it counts as a (60 x 0.781) 46.86s run.

But my Firefly is not stock, and now runs in E/Mod. Let's say I run a 53s run in it. The PAX is applied, and my run counts as a (53 x .89) 47.38.

Not fast enough, to beat a stock Firefly. I'd actually have to run a 52 to win. Which makes sense: you -should- be faster in a faster car, but quite a bit faster. PAX is an attempt at putting it all on a level playing field. If the E/Mod Firefly could only pull off a 59 to the stock Firefly's 60, I suck. I anticipate sucking a lot, actually ("you already do, G, you already do").

(Veteran Tip: The only way to win PAX is in a stock class car. Unless you're an alien.)
Lethal Locost - street legal roller skate
Fiendish Firefly - 5.7lbs of engine in a 1lb bag
Crusty Chevy - shortboxed and dropped, potato potato

No....it's just really hard to win top pax in a Mod car on a small lot

I actually just checked because I was curious - looks like Kelowna top pax last year was roughly 50/50 between Street and Street Touring.

A-Mod Greg - you know you want to......everything else is just a compromise 8-)
